A little help getting started

Install or update the Android alpha

Open this page on your Android phone, download the APK, then open the downloaded file. Android may ask you to allow installation from your browser.

In The Experiment, choose Allow app blocking → Allow Accessibility and follow the permission steps. You can use blocking without connecting a computer.

For updates, download from the same button and install over the existing alpha. Don’t uninstall it first: uninstalling removes its local data.

Install or update on Mac

Open the downloaded DMG and drag The Experiment to Applications. The linked 0.1.90 installer is signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple. macOS may ask you to confirm the first launch.

If you previously used an alpha build, quit all copies of The Experiment before installing this version. Do not override a warning that software is malicious or damaged.

If version 0.1.62 shows an error, dismiss it and replace the app in Applications. If an older installer stays running without a window, use Apple menu → Force Quit → The Experiment, then install this update. You do not need to delete your saved data.

Connect your phone and Mac

On your Mac, open Settings → Add a Phone → Show QR code. On Android, open The Experiment → Connect your computer → Scan computer QR. On iPhone, sign in to the same account and scan the Mac’s QR from device setup.

The code expires after three minutes. Settings → Add a Phone also lets you control optional private device sync.

Used Apple to sign in on iPhone? Open Settings → Account → Set a password in the iPhone app. Then sign in on your Mac with that account’s username or email and the password you set. If you chose Hide My Email, use the account shown in the iPhone app.

Set up Safari protection

Install the Mac app above, then open Your progress → Block in browser → Open Safari settings. In Safari → Settings → Extensions, enable the companion extension included with the Mac app.

Open the extension in the Safari toolbar, choose Allow access to websites and confirm Safari’s permission request. If access was explicitly denied, change it in Safari’s extension settings.

Enable the extension in each Safari profile you use. Allow it in private browsing separately if you want protection there. Keep the Mac app open; Safari connects automatically and uses your Mac schedule.

Your progress → Block in browser shows Safari and Chrome separately. Protecting either browser is enough to complete this rule. A connected browser still needs website access and a successfully applied schedule before protection is confirmed.

Connect the Chrome companion

Follow the Add to Chrome link above, choose Add to Chrome in the Web Store and confirm Add extension. Keep Chrome and the Mac app open for a few seconds; they connect automatically.

If they do not connect, open Chrome → Extensions and make sure the companion extension is enabled in the profile you use, with site access set to On all sites. The extension’s popup shows connection, website access and schedule status.

Your data

Activity history stays on your devices unless you enable optional end-to-end encrypted device sync. Account, blocking settings and shared community info are readable by our server.

Your community map profile and battery are shared by default. You can hide them on Mac in Settings → Privacy & security.
